Abstract
1,236,381. Reinforced concrete. R. E. CLOUGH. 12 July, 1968 [15 April, 1967], No. 17383/67. Heading E1W. A concrete member is reinforced by a prestressed composite unit comprising at least one component held under tension by compression in a further component of substantially equal resilience. The compression and tension members of the reinforcement may be of identical specific resilience and of substantially equal length and cross sectional area. The members may all be in the form of rods and the forces of tension and compression may be applied by a jack whilst the compression and tension members are held in a cradle, the .members being welded together at their ends and at intermediate points before removal from the cradle. In another embodiment employing rods, the rods 2 to be subjected to compression are bowed and welded at their ends to the rods 1 to be subjected to tension. The forces of tension and compression are induced by sliding rings 14 along the assembly to straighten the rods 2. The rings may remain in place or may be removed after welding the rods together at intermediate points. In other embodiments a rod or cable under tension is contained within a tube under compression, the resiliences having been tested to ensure substantial equality.
