Abstract

1,235,704. Coating. EASTMAN KODAK CO. 13 June, 1968 [13 June, 1967], No. 28249/ 68. Heading B2E. A method of coating substrate material surfaces comprises extruding a predetermined amount of a plastics coating material onto the surfaces characterised in that the coating material is applied onto a portion of the surface in a longitudinally striped area in a beadlike form and thereafter spreading out to form a layer, with a pre-determined thickness, the width of the layer depending on the amount of the applied material. The substrate may be paper, ceramics, cloth, wood or metal' and may constitute sheet material or a continuous roll, whilst the plastics material is preferably a thermoplastic material, such as a polyolefin, which may be applied to the substrate in heated form and then cured by cooling below the melting point. The applied coating material may be maintained in a heated condition until it is spread out by utilising a heated cylinder for moving the substrate to the spreading roll or roller. The coated surface may be embossed immediately after or in conjunction with the spreading step and this deformation step is applicable for articulated surfaces, contoured surfaces, braille systems or computer tapes and cards. Smooth protective or decorative coatings may be obtained having a uniform thickness of 1-3 mms. A plurality of applicators for the plastics material may be employed but when only one is used it is preferably that this should have a plurality of nozzle openings. The heads of the applicators are closely adjacent the substrate path and preferably between 0.002 and 0.250 inches above the substrate.
