Abstract

A signal corresponding to the magnitude of a process variable is applied to a digital computer which calculates any necessary correction of that variable and applies a corresponding signal, intermittently through an amplifier having capacitive feedback, to correct the variable, a signal corresponding to the magnitude of the variable also being applied through an impedance to the amplifier during the intervals between corrections by the computer. In Fig.1, a D.C. signal dependent on a variable of a process 1 is produced by a measuring device 5 and applied to a digital computer 6 which calculates any necessary correction of the variable, e.g. by comparing its magnitude with a desired value, and periodically operates a relay 10, 8 so that a condenser 9 is alternately charged to the correction voltage and connected to an operational amplifier 4 having capacitive feedback the output of which operates a device 2 correcting the process variable. The signal from measuring device 5 is also applied through an impedance 7 to amplifier 4 so as to anticipate changes in the correcting voltage from computer 6 in the intervals before such changes become effective. Network 7 which blocks the D.C. component, includes capacity and is chosen to provide optimum anticipation. In proportional plus integral control, the proportional component may be provided through impedance 7 and the integral component through computer 6. If the computer fails or is rendered ineffective by automatic or manual operation of a switch 11, the signal applied through impedance 7 provides emergency control. Overriding manual control of the variable may be produced by operation of switches 12 and 13 to apply signals of appropriate polarity to amplifier 4. In a modification, impedance 7 is disconnected from amplifier 4 and a feedback resistor connected to amplifier 4 each time the signal from computer 6 is applied directly to amplifier 4.
