Abstract

1,235,457. Road traffic signals on vehicles. K. K. KNOPF. 4 March, 1970 [10 Dec., 1969], No. 10362/70. Heading G4Q. A vehicle signalling system to indicate successive stages of deceleration to following vehicles comprises a plurality of side-by-side illuminated panels with silhouetted words on the rear of the vehicle, illumination of the first panel ceasing when the second panel is illuminated. A first panel is illuminated on removal of the foot from the accelerator pedal, a second panel on application of slight pressure to the brake pedal, and third, fourth and fifth panels by the brake fluid pressure according to the severity of braking. The brightness or area of the panel increases with rapidity of deceleration. A switch in the vehicle illuminates additional lamps in one of the panels to indicate an emergency. An electric circuit including relays is described. Some of the warning lights are provided with flashing devices. Illumination of the first panel at low speeds is prevented by a switch automatically controlled according to the spped of the vehicle. Additional brightness is provided during daytime by extra lamps included in the circuit by a switch controlled by a photo-cell. A panel carrying a slogan may also be periodically illuminated.
