Abstract

1,235,069. Electromagnetic actuators. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 29 May, 1969, No. 27165/69. Heading HIP. . The armature of an actuator. comprises a plunger slidably supported by means of gas bearings. As shown, Fig. 1, the actuator comprises a coil 2 mounted in a housing consisting of an outer cylindrical member 3, two end members 4 and 5 and an inner cylindrical member 6. Pressurized gas is supplied to the housing through pipe 8 and escapes through a plurality of bores 9 in the end members 4 and 5. The plunger 1 is a loose fit within the housing and is supported by the gas jets. The gas flowing over the coil also provides a cooling effect allowing the power rating to be increased. The gas jets may be provided in the plunger instead of in the housing.
