Abstract

[Also in Division B7] A structural element comprises a core disposed between two facing layers, the core having one or more voids filled with liquid or gas under pressure. The voids are usually of geometric shape such as spheres or cylinders which latter may be constituted by a continuous length of tubing. The facing layers 11 may be of reinforced plastics material such as resin-impregnated glass fibre mats or of resin-bonded fibre board and the core 10 may be of similar material, of flexible plastics thin walled tubing or of metal. The voids may all be connected to a common source of fluid under pressure or may be completely sealed off and pressurized by heating to increase the pressure of the entrapped air or by causing a gas-liberating chemical reaction therein.
