Abstract

1,159,957. Thermosetting laminates. WILLIAM MALLINSON & SONS (MFG.) Ltd. 31 Aug., 1966 [16 Sept., 1965], No. 39598/65. Heading B5N. A thermosetting resin laminate comprises a core which consists of either (a) one or more layers of a thermosetting resin-impregnated woven or felted fibrous material sandwiched between wood plies, or (b) one or more wood plies sandwiched between layers of thermosetting resin-impregnated woven or felted fibrous material; said core being provided with outer layers of surface material, either or both of which consist of wood veneers or plastic veneers or plastic-impregnated paper or metal foil. The fibrous material may be wool felt. In one embodiment two layers of gaboon mahogany are sandwiched between resinimpregnated asbestos felt layers, and outer layers, one of aluminium foil and the other of walnut veneer or resin-impregnated kraft paper are provided. In the embodiment shown, two core plies 4, 4<SP>1</SP> of gaboon mahogany are sandwiched between layers 3, 31 of felt impregnated with phenolic resin, and outer layers 1, 1<SP>1</SP> of walnut veneer are provided. Layers 2, 2<SP>1</SP> of kraft paper impregnated with phenolic resin are present between the layers 1 and 3, and 1<SP>1</SP> and 3<SP>1</SP> respectively. The laminates are cured and shaped under heat and pressure in a mould and are heat- and water-resistant, and waterimpervious.
