Abstract

1,234,524. Gripping tool. AMP Inc. 2 Sept., 1969 [20 Sept., 1968], No. 43395/69. Heading B4W. [Also in Divisions E1-E2] A one piece plastics fastener is formed from an extruded strip and comprising a body portion 40 and a solid shank 50 extending from the body portion, longitudinally from a leading to a trailing end of the fastener in the extrusion direction, the shank being adapted to extend through an aperture in a panel, a portion of the shank being deformable when the shank extends through the aperture and the fastener twisted. In the construction shown the shank adjacent the body portion 40 has pockets 52 at each corner of the cross-section and when the shank is inserted into an aperture of the shape shown in Fig. 8 and twisted to the position shown in Fig. 8 portions of the pockets 52 engaged by the wall parts of the aperture are deformed the deformed material 53 securing the member against releasing rotation. As shown resilient arms 42 extend substantially transversely of the body portion 40, each arm 42 tapering slightly from its end adjacent the body portion 40 to its free end and each arm being inclined generally downwardly; when the member is assembled to the panel the arms 42 exert an axial upward thrust which tends to hold the member in its fully seated and engaged position in the panel. The member shown is a stand-off fastener for use with a printed circuit board and has two arms extending from a base 38 stepped from the central body portion 40 the arms being joined at their upper extremities to define an aperture 36. A modified fastener having a shank, a body portion and arms 42 identical with the above is also described but in which the fastener is intended to engage a wire or cable; in this construction the two joined together arms extending from the base 38 are omitted and instead two upstanding arms between which the wire or cable can be passed are provided. In a third fastener the upstanding arms are omitted and instead the fastener is intended for joining two panels in face to face relation, the shank being long enough for this purpose. The fasteners are made from an extruded strip which is subsequently formed by coining and blanking to the final configuration of the fasteners which are only partially severed so that webs joining the individual fasteners are left, the webs being broken during assembly. The fasteners are assembled to the panels by using a hand tool which has a handle and a shank the shank having an aperture extending from its free end which is shaped to accept the portion of the fastener above the arms 42.
