Abstract

1,234,192. Heat-treating coated articles. CENTRE STEPHANOIS DE RECHERCHE MECANIQUE HYDROMECANIQUE ET FROTTEMENT. May 16, 1968 [May 16, 1967; July 12, 1967; Nov. 24, 1967; March 12, 1968], No.23431/68. Heading C7B. A method of treating the surface of a metal part B intended for frictional contact with a part A, comprises depositing a layer comprising or consisting of a metal D and subsequently heattreating. The part B contains a metal C which is capable of forming a hard alloy with metal D, C being either an alloying ingredient of B or being deposited thereon as a layer prior to deposition of D. The heat-treatment comprises first maintaining at a temperature lower by at least 20‹ C. than the lowest melting point of the metals involved to cause limited diffusion between the layers and/ or between these layers and the substrate B, and then maintaining at a temperature higher than the said lowest melting point but less than 800‹ C. to form a composite layer comprising either (1) a layer comprising or consisting of D, an intermediate layer comprising a hard alloy of C and D and underlying B or (2) a composite layer as in (1) with a residual layer of C between the hard alloy layer and underlying B. An additional layer of metal C or another metal E may be provided the metal E being substantially non-alloyable with A and C. In the examples, heat-treatment follows the application of coatings by electrolytic processes. Annealed steel is coated with copper and then tin or indium or indium-lead alloy; bronze or stainless steel or a copper-aluminium alloy are coated with tin.
