Chlorhydrocarbons.-Benzene homologues are chlorinated in the side-chain by passing a mixture of the hydrocarbon vapour and chlorine through a chamber exposed to ultraviolet light. When using a low-pressure mercury vapour lamp, a mixture of benzyl chloride and benzal chloride is produced from toluene; a high-pressure mercury vapour lamp gives benzotrichloride.
