[Also in Division C2] A catalyst suitable for use in the production of maleic acid or maleic anhydride by oxidation of benzene and/or an alkylbenzene with molecular oxygen or a gas containing molecular oxygen consists of 60 to 80% of titanium dioxide as carrier material, 5 to 30% of vanadium pentoxide, 5 to 30% of molybdenum trioxide and 1.5 to 5.0% of phosphorus pentoxide, the percentages being by weight and with reference to the total amount of the catalyst components. The surface area of the catalyst is generally from 5 to 12m<SP>2</SP>/g, and its mean pore radius is generally from 400 to 500A.
