Abstract
1,233,120. Chucks. DEVLIEG MACHINE CO. 16 Dec., 1969, No. 61360/69. Heading B3B. An axially adjustable chuck comprises a cavity 16 containing a sleeve 22 and a collet 24 having a threaded portion 40 to receive the threaded end 38 of a tool shank 34. A seat member 46 is slidable in a bore 66 and prevented from rotation by a key 60, the axial position of the seat member being adjustable by means of a collar 52. A spring 70 biased locking screw 68 holds a surface 56 of the collar 52 against an annular surface 58 of the chuck body. The surfaces 56 and 58 are conical to hold the seat member 46 concentric with the axis of the chuck. In operation a tool shank 34 is inserted and screwed into the threads 40 of the collet 24 until engagement of the shank with a conical centre 44 of the seat member. Further screwing in of the shank moves the collet 24 outwardly against taper portion 30 of the sleeve 22 to grip the shank 34. After a re-grinding of the tool the position of the seat member is adjusted. Slots in the body allow a tommy-bar 74 to engage holes in the collar 52 to make adjustment. Alternatively the collar may include gear-teeth that engage a bevel pinion on an adjusting shaft (Fig. 4, not shown). A graduated scale is provided for both the tommy bar adjustment of the collar 52 and for the bevel pinion shaft adjustment.
