A cutter drum has shearer cutters 3 and clearance cutters 5 and a carrier 9 rotatable with and displaceable axially of the drum and carrying sumping cutters 13. The carrier has arms 11 slidably received in slots in the drum and in its retracted position a beam 10 of the carrier is disposed in a slot 7; it is moved by a hydraulic ram 12. When extended the carrier is adapted to cut a recess of a depth equal to the drum width, cuttings being removed through an aperture 15.
