Abstract
1,232,617. Silicon carbide. LAPORTE INDUSTRIES Ltd. 17 Oct., 1969 [21 Oct., 1968; 29 Aug., 1969], Nos. 49888/68 and 43137/69. Heading C1A. Silicon carbide whiskers are prepared by contacting at elevated temperature in a reaction zone a gaseous halogen-containing silicon compound and a source of carbon selected from solid phase carbon and gaseous carbon-containing compounds, at least part of the source being solid phase carbon, with a refractory oxide material containing or consisting of one or both of aluminium oxide and beryllium oxide and effecting deposition of silicon carbide from the resulting gaseous products. The refractory oxide material may be combined with silica or it may be an alumino silicate. The refractory material and at least part of the solid phase carbon are preferably in particulate form. The refractory material calculated as aluminium or beryllium oxide preferably constitutes greater than 1% by weight of the total weight of solid phase carbon and refractory material in the reaction zone. The gaseous halogen containing silicon compound may be a silicon halide preferably silicon tetrachloride or silicon tetrafluoride or it may be an alkylhalosilane preferably containing fluorine and chlorine and up to three carbon atoms per molecule. The gaseous carbon containing compound may be carbon monoxide, a hydrocarbon, preferably a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon, preferably methane. The hydrocarbon may be one that cracks at the elevated temperature and provides at least part of the solid phase carbon. A diluent gas, preferably hydrogen, may be introduced with the gaseous reactants. The elevated temperature lies in the range between 1350‹ and 1800‹ C., preferably 1450‹ to 1650‹ C.
