Abstract
In the production of zirconium tetrachloride by the reaction of chlorine with a fluidised bed of a zirconia-silica compound such as zircon, in the presence of a reducing agent, preferably carbon, a zirconium-containing additive which reacts highly exothermically with chlorine is fed to the bed to maintain the required high temperature thereof. The additive is added in amount less than and preferably 10-80% by weight of, the zirconiasilica compound employed; suitable additives are zirconium cyanonitride, nitride or carbide or impure zirconium metal such as dross, cuttings or turnings. Zircon of particle size from 76-250 microns may be employed in admixture with carbon, preferably petroleum coke, in a proportion of 4 to 1. The reactor employed is provided with a perforated base plate across which pressure drop is 1/2 to 50 times the pressure drop across the bed. Zirconium and silicon tetrachlorides are formed and condensed in separate chambers. Specifications 794,666 and 813,489 are referred to.
