Abstract
1,232,276. Histologic tissue receptacle. TRIANGLE BIOMEDICAL EQUIPMENT Inc. May 22, 1968, No.24437/68. Heading G2J. A histologic tissue receptacle comprises three elements, a rectangular mould, a base pan detachiably secured to the mould at one end and a top cover secured to the mould at the other end. A tissue specimen 40 is embedded in paraffin wax 41 to facilitate transportation and cutting in a microtome. In one embodiment a tissue receptacle Fig. 1 comprises an open mould 20 having interior walls which converge inwardly in a shallow V-slope which serves to secure the hardened paraffin wax body 41 and has one of its exterior side wall surfaces etched to receive a graphite type marking pencil; a base pan 30 shaped to receive either end of open mould 20 to provide a leakproof connection; a top 11 having a plurality of openings (17) Fig. 2 (not shown) for admitting and draining processing liquids, shaped to receive the other end of open mould 20, and having knobs 18 protruding from each corner to keep the top of one receptacle separate from the base pan of another receptacle when the two are placed together. The open mould 20, base pan 30 and top 11 are formed of a mouldable material, such as polypropylene, which is inert to the processing liquids. A tissue specimen 40 is placed through the open top of base pan 30, and placed on the thin heat conductive bottom wall (31) Fig.5 (not shown) having at least one small opening (36). An open ended mould 20 is then secured to the base pan and a perforated top 11 on to the other open end of the open mould 20, to form a tissue-carrying receptacle. Appropriate indecia is applied on an exterior surface of the open mould, and the receptacle is sequently immersed in various processing liquids, such as alcohol, xylene. The perforated top is then detached from the open mould, the tissue specimen repositioned on the base pan bottom (31) Fig. 5 (not shown) and liquid paraffin wax poured to a level covering the tissue specimen, and then liquid paraffin is cooled to secure the tissue specimen in a paraffin wax body. Thereafter the open mould is securely seated between microtome jaws 42, 43, Fig. 11, the base pan detached exposing the paraffin body for cutting by microtome blade 44 to provide a slice 45. The base pan 30 is repositioned on to the open mould 20 for storing. In an alternative embodiment Fig. 12 (not shown) the open mould (60) Fig. 15 (not shown) has a first integral flange (69), (Fig. 12) extending outwardly of which at least one upper surface is adapted to receive indecia marking and a second inwardly extending flange (59) Fig. 15 which serves the same purpose as the shallow V-slope in the first embodiment. The said open mould includes grooves (65 and 74), Fig. 16 (not shown), to snap fit into respective base pan and top cover; the base pan (75) Fig. 17 (not shown) is adapted to be torn along fracture grooves (83, 84) Fig. 19 (not shown) by pulling tab (82), (Fig. 12), and is provided with at least one insert filler (86), (Fig. 17) in order to form a paraffin block in a size smaller than the size of the base pan.
