Abstract

1,232,230. Jointing by stamping; making electrical connections. THOMAS & BETTS CORP. 20 Nov., 1968 [14 Dec., 1967], No. 55169/68. Headings B3A and B3Q. [Also in Divisions D1 and H2] A sleeve coupling 20, e.g. for connecting together two conductors comprises inner and outer metal sleeves 22, 24 disposed coaxially and sealed together as by welding, at their ends 34 to define an enclosed space 32, a passageway 40 in the outer sleeve 22 permitting the application to the space 32 of a high pressure medium from a source such as 44 in order to crimp inner sleeve 24 to conductors (not shown) inserted in each end of sleeve 24. Outer sleeve 22 is made of rigid Al or alloy, while inner sleeve 24 is of more malleable Al alloy and has a central transverse partition 26. The high pressure medium employed may be hydraulic fluid (in which case space 32 may be initially filled with such fluid), or gas, or particulate solid material such as silicon; or lengths of silicone rubber may be forced into space 32 by an hydraulic ram; or an explosive material within or outside the coupling may be electrically detonated to produce the crimping pressure or a substance which produces a gas on being heated may be located within the coupling. After crimping, the material used may be retained in space 32 by plugging passageway 40, and may be selected to enhance or inhibit cooling of the coupling. In place of welding, the ends of the sleeves may be sealed together by crimping or rolling in each case sealing rings being interposed between the sleeves. Partition 26 may extend radially to outer sleeve 22, in which case two enclosed spaces 32, each having a pressure-admitting passage 40, are formed; and a further pair of coaxial sleeves, similarly sealed together and disposed at right angles to the main coupling, may be provided to act as a branch connector. The inner and outer sleeves 72, 74, Fig. 9, may be integrally formed in one longitudinal region 76; this embodiment incorporates corona discharge rings 80. The coupling may be used to join two cables, or to connect a cable to a terminal member; alternatively, one end of the outer sleeve may be formed as a clevis or other fastening device. For connecting underground cables, the coupling may be provided with a protective insulating sheath.
