Abstract

1,232,027. Production of alkylphenols. COAL TAR RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. 13 Nov., 1968 [16 Aug., 1967], No. 37768/67. Heading C2C. A process for the conversion of a first alkylphenol to a second alkylphenol comprises heating said first alkylphenol with phenol in the vapour phase and in the presence of an alumina catalyst. Examples of alkylphenols which are transalkylated by this process are cresol, a xylenol, an ethylphenol, a trimethylphenol, an ethylmethylphenol, a propyl- or isopropylphenol, a diethylphenol, a methylpropylphenol and a tetramethylphenol. The process can be conveniently carried out at temperatures in the range of 350-500‹ C., preferably 400-470‹ C. The #-form of alumina catalyst is preferred, a partially dehydrated boehmite which may contain acidic impurities being particularly suitable for the purpose.
