Abstract

[Also in Division D1] Novel compounds of formula in which R f is a C 4-16 perfluoroalkyl group, Y is a C 2-12 alkylene group or a C 2-60 alkylene group interrupted by -O-, -S-, -SO-, -SO 2 -, -SONR<SP>1</SP>-, -CONR<SP>1</SP>-, -COO- or -NR<SP>1</SP>-, R<SP>1</SP> being hydrogen, C 1-4 alkyl or ureido, R 1 and R 2 are hydrogen, C 1-4 alkyl or in combination complete an imidazolidine or hexahydropyrimidine ring and R is hydrogen, C 1-4 alkyl or a group R f -Y-, there being at least one urea nitrogen atom with hydrogen bonded thereto and hydroxymethylated and C 1-4 alkoxymethylated derivatives thereof, are prepared by (a) reaction of an amine R f -YNHR 1 with phosgene, a carbamoyl chloride, an isocyanate or urea, (b) formation of a sulphonamide group in Y by reaction of a sulphonyl halide with a ureido-containing amine, (c) reaction of a compound R f I with allyl urea to give a compound R f CH 2 CHICH 2 - NHCONH 2 , followed by deiodination by catalytic hydrogenation, or (d) methylolation and etherification. The compounds of the invention have oil- and water-proofing properties (see (Division D1). The compounds C 8 F 17 CH 2 CH 2 NHC 4 H 9 and C 8 F 17 CH 2 CH 2 NHCH 2 CH 2 NH 2 are prepared by reaction of C 8 F 17 CH 2 CH 2 I with the appropriate amine. The compound C 8 F 17 CH 2 CH 2 SCH 2 CH 2 NH 2 is prepared by reaction of C 8 F 17 CH 2 CH 2 SH with #-chloro-ethylamine. The compound C 8 F 17 CH 2 CH 2 SO 2 NHCH 2 CH 2 - NH 2 is prepared by reaction of C 8 F 17 CH 2 CH 2 I with thiourea followed by chlorination to give C 8 F 17 CH 2 CH 2 SO 2 Cl, and reacting this with ethylene diamine.
