The invention comprises tetra-substituted formamido - chloroformamidines of the formual: in which R 1 , R 2 and R 3 , which may be the same or different, represent substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon radicals and X represents a radical derived by loss of one atom of chlorine from a chloride of an acid of carbon, nitrogen, sulphur and/or phosphorus which chloride does not contain an ionisable hydrogen atom. The above compounds are prepared by reacting a metane imine, substituted on the three nitrogen atoms by substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon radicals, with a compound of the formula X-C1. The metane imine reactants may contain the metane imine grouping once or several times in the molecule, linkage of the metane imine groups in the latter case being by way of hydrocarbon bridges. The hydrocarbon substituents may also be substituted by chlorine atoms or by alkoxy, nitro, isocyanate, isocyanurate or urethane groups. The compound X-C1 is exemplified by acetyl chloride, benzoyl chloride, cyanogen chloride, phosgene, thiophosgene, methylchloroformate, nitrosyl chloride, sulphur dichloride, thionyl chloride, sulphuryl chloride, perchloromethyl mercaptan, methane sulphur-chloride, methyl chlorosulphonate, chlorosulphonic acid dimethyl amide, phosphorus trichloride, phosphorus oxychloride and dichlorophenyl phosphene.
