Abstract
1,231,901. Insulating pipe joint. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 18 Feb., 1970 [18 Feb., 1969], No. 8647/69. Heading F2G. [Also in Division H2] In a joint for high pressure liquids (e.g. cooling liquid) in which two electrically conducting pipes 1, 2 within an electrical machine are mutually insulated by a rigid insulating sleeve 6, metal collars 5, 7, are interposed between the pipe ends and the spacer sleeve 6, at least that collar which is anodic when the machine is in use being of a metal which forms a protective electrically resistant skin under electrolytic action. Suitable metals for the collars are titanium, tantalum, niobium, zirconium, vanadium, hafnium or any alloys thereof. The collars may be welded or brazed to the pipes, or may removably abut the pipe ends, a, as shown, abut ferrules 3, 4 on the pipes which ferrules may be of the material of either pipes or collars. The joint may be held together by a nut 12 and an external sleeve 9 insulated from pipe 1 by a ceramic oxide plug 11, and insulating layers 14, 15. The insulating sleeve 6 is of metallic oxide and the pipes 1 and 2, or the end portions thereof may be titanium. Sealing rings 8 are of an ageing resistant plastics material. The joint is suitable for connecting the cooling manifold and windings of an electric generator. Specification 1,150,047 is referred to.
