Abstract

1,231,782. Motors with permanent magnets. CARTER ENG. CO. Ltd. 1 May, 1968 [8 May, 1967], No. 21331/67. Heading H2A. An electric motor comprises an armature disc rotatable. relative to a housing 10 and including a plurality of overlapping coils 20, best depicted in Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), lying substantially in the plane of the disc and encapsulated in synthetic resin material firmly bonded to a commutator 17 to which the ends of the coils are connected, the motor further comprising brushes 29 carried by the housing and a magnetic pole structure having pole faces adjacent the coils. The D.C. motor shown is adapted to drive a vehicle road wheel 42 and includes a plurality of circumferentially spaced brushes 29 mounted between permanent magnets 37 carried by a ring 38 of magnetic material, a similar ring 39 being mounted on the side of the coils opposite the magnets 37. The magnets carry magnetizing coils 40 which, after initial magnetization of the magnets, are connected in series with the armature coils to prevent de-magnetization of the magnets. The casing is made of conductive material and the resin encapsulating the coils contains iron powder.
