Abstract

1,231,732. Rotary impact wrench. INGERSOLL-RAND CO. 17 June, 1969 [23 Aug., 1968], No. 30626/69. Heading B3N. A pneumatic impact tool includes an anvil 15 carrying a pair of jaws 24, a hammer carrier 17 surrounding the anvil and carrying a pair of opposed tilting hammer dogs 25; the hammer dogs have a middle position where they can rotate around the anvil without engaging it and can be tilted to impact the anvil jaws in either direction. The hammer dogs are connected by a link 35 causing them to move in unison, and a camming means 35, 39, 40, 41 co-operating with the anvil and hammer dogs, is operative to tilt the hammer dogs, Fig. 5, to their impact positions once, each revolution of the hammer carrier 17. An automatic stopping means, 30, 32, 33, prevents them from tilting to the wrong impact position in each direction of rotation. The dogs 25 are proportioned and mounted so that they automatically swing to their non- impact positions following an impact. The camming means is rendered inoperative after said hammer dogs are tilted but before said hammer dogs engage the jaws.
