Novel quinoxaline - 1,4 - di - N - oxide - 3 - carboxylic acid amides of the general formula wherein R 1 is a hydrogen or chlorine atom or a C 1-4 alkyl or C 1-4 alkoxy group; R 2 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group which may be substituted by a hydroxy, C 1-4 alkoxy, carbalkoxy, acyloxy or mono- or di-alkylamino radical; R 3 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group which may be substituted by a hydroxy, C 1-4 alkoxy, carbalkoxy, acyloxy or mono- or di-alkylamino radical or, when R 2 is a hydrogen atom, a cyclohexyl group; or R 2 and R 3 , together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached, form a 5- or 6-membered saturated ring, optionally containing an oxygen atom or a further nitrogen atom, the latter optionally carrying a C 1-4 alkyl group which may be substituted by a hydroxy, methoxy or acetoxy group; R 4 is an alkyl group which may be substituted by a halogen atom or a phenyl group which may be substituted by a hydroxy, methoxy or acetoxy radical; and X is an oxygen or sulphur atom; are prepared (a) by reaction of a 2-halomethyl-quinoxaline-1,4-di- N-oxide-3-carboxylic acid amide of the general formula wherein Hal is a chlorine or bromine atom, with a salt of the general formula R 4 COXM, wherein M is a sodium, potassium or ammonium ion, in an organic solvent at 40-160 C.; or (b), when X is an oxygen atom, by oxidation of a quinoxaline-3-carboxylic acid amide of the general formula with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of glacial acetic acid or acetic anhydride, or with an organic per-acid. 2 - Halomethyl - quinoxaline - 1,4 - di - N- oxide-3-carboxylic acid amides of the second general formula above are prepared by halogenation of 2 - methyl - quinoxaline - 1,4- di-N-oxide-3-carboxylic acid amides. Pharmaceutical compositions having antibacterial activity comprise, as active ingredient, a quinoxaline-1,4-di-N-oxide-3-carboxylic acid amide of the first general formula above, in admixture with a solid or liquid diluent or carrier, and may be administered orally, rectally or parenterally.
