Abstract

1,231,149. Machine tools. 'CLYDESIDE MACHINE TOOL CO. Ltd. 27 Jan., 1969, No. 4425/69. Heading B3N. A device for the attachment of tapping tools or studs to a vertical drilling machine comprises a shank 10 for attachment to a vertical drilling machine, the shank drivingly carrying a cylindrical body 11 which has within it an adapter 22 in which a tool e.g. tap 27 can be engaged. The adapter is driven via clutch means which comprises teeth (25), Fig. 4 (not shown), on the adapter and teeth 14 which are driven by resilient pads 15 which are held positioned by a sleeve 16a. Balls 18 engage in an annular recess 23 and allow free limited axial movement of the adapter relative to the body 11. In operation, after a first entry into a given hole removal of the tool will be followed by the adapter falling to its lowest position. Thus on a next entry into the hole the tool initially, although the adapter will be rotated, will have no end thrust on it thus allowing the tool to mesh with the top of the thread already tapped. Variation in the slip value of the clutch can be achieved by using an adapter having a greater engagement depth between the clutch teeth, or by rotating sleeve 16a such that the shaped inner face of the sleeve gives a different resiliency to the pads 15.
