Abstract

1,230,950. Irradiating food. SULZER BROS. Ltd. 4 Dec., 1969 [5 Dec., 1968], No. 59297/69. Heading A2D. [Also in Divisions B8 and H5] Foodstuffs - e.g. fish, meat products, or fruit - irradiated by gamma rays, are enclosed for the duration of the irradiation, in a gas impermeable package which also contains, in physical contact with the gases inside the package, a material capable of combining, either physically or chemically, with oxygen, whereby continued ripening, or deleterious effects produced in the foodstuffs by the oxygen, or by no-scent oxygen or ozone generated from the oxygen by the action of the gamma rays, is avoided. The package 11, which may be of paper covered with aluminium foil and coated with a plastics material, is hermetically sealed by a welded seam 13, and contains a perforated cartridge 14 filled with a granular oxygencombining material. In alternative arrangements, the cartridge 14 may be formed by a perforated semi-cylinder welded along its two longitudinal edges to the package material (Fig. 3, not shown); the package material may be coated with a layer formed by an extruded mixture of the oxygen-combining material, in granular form, with polyethylene (Fig. 4, not shown); or the oxygen-combing material is contained in a thin glass container in a cloth bag within the package, and the container is broken when desired to expose the gases to the material (Fig. 5, not shown). The oxygen-combining material may be silica gel, bentonite, or particulate manganese, aluminium, or magnesium.
