Abstract
1,230,678. Strengthening glass. FIZIKOTEKHNICHESKY INSTITUT IMENI AF IOFFE AN-SSSR. 7 Aug., 1969, No. 39529/ 69. Heading B2E. [Also in Division C1] Glass is strengthened by (i) etching the surface of the glass with an acid solution, (ii) removing the acid, (iii) applying a heat-hardenable protective coating to the etched surface of the glass, and (iv) hardening said coating at not above 40‹C; the glass, after removal of the acid, being maintained in an atmosphere whose relative humidity is not above 50% and which contains no more than 100 dust particles, of maximum diameter 10Á per c.c., until the coating applied. The glass may be etched to a total depth of 150Á in stages, the acid being a 20% by weight hydrofluoric acid solution which is removed by washing with water. The coating may be a shellac varnish applied as an alcoholic solution. A hydrophobic organic compound, e.g. methyltrichlorosilane, may be applied to the glass surface before the coating.
