Abstract
1,230,632. Non-amorphous cerium phosphate. COMITATO NAZIONALE PER L'ENERGIA NUCLEARE. 13 May, 1968 [12 May, 1967], No. 22586/68. Heading C1A. Non-amorphous (i.e. Crystalline, Semi-Crystalline or Fibrous) Cenium (IV) Phosphate is produced by reacting a solution of a Ce (IV) salt with phosphoric acid, the molar ratio of PO 4 to Ce in solution being at least 1À5, the precipitation temperature being between 35‹ C. and the boiling temperature of the solution obtained. The precipitated product is preferably left to digest at above 35‹ C. for such a time that crystalline Cenium (IV) phosphate is formed. In an example 0À025 M Ce(SO 4 ) 2 .4H 2 O in sulphuric acid is reacted with 6 M Phosphoric acid (i.e. PO 4 /Ce= 240) in sulphuric acid. The factors involved in obtaining an ordered structure in the precipitated product are (a) Temperature, (b) Digestion Time, (c) PO 4 /Ce ratio in solution, these factors being inter-related. The Cenium (IV) Phosphate of ordered structure obtained in the process shows greater ion-exchange capacity, and less tendency to hydrolyse, than amorphous Ce (IV) phosphate.
