Abstract

1,230,108. Electrophotographic element. RICHO K.K. 28 June, 1968 [30 June, 1967], No. 31020/68. Heading H1K. An electrophotographic element comprises a support having thereon a light-sensitive layer containing a photo-conductor and a polybasic acid monoester of polyvinyl acetate as a resin binder, the monoester being insoluble in water but soluble in alkaline solution. The polybasic acid is preferably fumaric, maleic or itaconic acid whilst the support may be a metal plate or paper coated or impregnated with a surfactant to render it conductive. The photoconductor may be ZnO, TiO 2 , ZnS, ZnSe or CdS and sensitizing dyestuffs such as Rose Bengal, Fluorescein, Bromophenol Blue, Tetrabromophenol Blue, Methylene Blue or Methyl Violet may be added. The element is prepared by coating the support with an aqueous solution of the monoester and a volatile base and drying the coated support. The base may be NH 3 , (C 2 H 5 ),N, (CH 3 ) 3 N, (C 2 H 5 ) 2 NH, (CH 3 ) 2 NH, C 2 H 5 NH 2 , CH 3 NH 2 , CH 3 (C 2 H 5 )NH, (iC 3 H 8 ) 2 NH or CH 3 N(C 2 H 5 ) 2 . Hydrogen peroxide may be added to initiate formation of a three-dimensional structure by the resin as the coating solution dries. A small quantity of the sodium salt of polyacrylic acid may be added to the solution as a dispersing agent.
