Abstract

A loud-speaker housing is filled by a rigid body having a network of intercommunicating cavities therein. As described the body may comprise a block of foamed plastics such as polyurethane. The housing may comprise a skin formed on the foamed plastic during moulding and be in the form of a block having two recesses for two speakers operating in different frequency ranges, the recesses to take the low-frequency speaker having the skin formed on its concave surface removed. Alternatively the housing may comprise a separate covering of wood, metal or plastics (e.g. a plastics laminate) the block being moulded inside the covering so that it adheres to it. In any event it should be impervious to air. Support studs to which a speaker may be attached may be moulded into the block around a recess or a foamed plastics block may be moulded with the speakers in place, the rear of the speakers being protected by wire mesh screens. To prevent a skin being formed at a screen, the screen has an inhibiting agent applied to it. The cavities between the screens and the speakers may be filled with a soundabsorbing material such as glass fibre. The enclosure may be provided with a window or opening to enable its resonance characteristics to be modified.
