Abstract
1,229,245. Clamps; props. MILLS SCAFFOLD CO. Ltd. 25 June, 1969 [31 May, 1968], No. 26104/68. Headings E1E and E2B. An assembly comprises inner and outer tubular members 10, 11 mounted in telescopic relationship and means for adjusting the relative axial positions of the two tubular members said means comprising an abutment member 17 carried by the inner tubular member, an adjustment member 19 engaging with said abutment member and with a substantial part of an end face 18 of the outer tubular member or the end face of a member carried by the outer member, the adjustment member being of U-shape in planes perpendicular to the longitudinal axes of the members and receiving at least the inner tubular member between the arms thereof which are each of wedge shape with the thin end of the wedge being at the free end of the arm, the arms being arranged so that the tubular members are adjustable in their relative axial positions by displacing the adjustment member in directions perpendicular to said longitudinal axes to vary the distance between said abutment member and said end face, and releasable locking means 26 for preventing the movement of the adjustment member from a predetermined position in a direction such as to decrease said distance. In the construction shown the abutment member is a peg which can be positioned in any pair of a number of pairs of aligned hole 16 in the inner tubular member. The adjustment member engages the end portions of the peg which project from the tubular member. The upper edge surface 23 of each arm 20 of the adjustment member engage the end portions of the peg and these are inclined to the horizontal whereas the lower edge surface 24 of each arm 20 is substantially horizontal and is engaged by part of the end face 18. The locking means is a pin 26 which is engageable in any one pair of a number of pairs of aligned holes 27 formed in the arms 20 and when inserted in the holes 27 nearest the base 22 preventing movement of the adjustment member to prevent shortening of the distance between the peg 17 and the end face 18. The assembly can form part of a scaffolding prop which includes a screw jack 13 the adjustment member allowing the load on the prop to be removed so that the jack 13 can be operated without being under load. In a modification the upper end portion of the outer member is threaded and receives a nut 35 with the end face of which the adjustment member is engaged; moving the adjustment member to the left releives the load on the nut which can then be operated without load.
