Novel 3,7-dimethyl-2,7-octadien-1-al derivatives of formula wherein R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>, R<SP>4</SP>, R<SP>5</SP> and R<SP>6</SP> independently denote hydrogen, methyl or ethyl providing that at least one of R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>6</SP> denotes a methyl or ethyl group are prepared either by (a) treating a carbinol of formula in the presence of catalytic amounts of a Cu, Ag or Au salt, e.g. Ag 2 CO 3 with an acid reagent e.g. glacial acetic acid and the reaction product is subsequently (when reaction is carried out in organic phase) or simultaneously (when carried out in aqueous phase) hydrolysed; or (b) oxidizing a carbinol of formula with chromic acid or an alkali metal dichromate in an aqueous acid medium, e.g. H 2 50 4 . The starting materials may be prepared according to Specification 1,227,400.
