Abstract

1,228,520. Automatic circuit - breakers. SQUARE D CO. 12 Nov., 1969 [18 Nov., 1968], No. 55376/69. Heading H1N. A circuit-breaker 20, otherwise similar to that of U.K. Specification 1,145,588, is characterized by a movable contact structure 60a including one or more main contact arms 73 and an arcing contact arm 71 pivoting about parallel axes, with the first point of arm 71 located between the pivoted and free end portions of arm 73, a contact arm carrier 62a having adjusting screws 86 engaging the main contact arm or arms 73 to adjust the biasing force of spring means 78 biasing the arms 71, 73 about their respective pivot axes. Where the arcing contact arm 71 is between two main contact arms 73, two bowed leaf-springs 78 abut a bracket 80 connected to the centre tine 74b of a flexible connector 74 secured to a terminal plate 76, tine 74b carrying the arm 71, and an adjusting stud 84 passes through the carrier 62a to engage arm 71 for adjustment thereof relative to the carrier 62a and arms 73. A modified assembly using a slightly different carrier 62b comprises a single main pivoted contact arm 102, Fig. 5, and an arcing contact arm 101, pivoted thereon at 103, a U-shaped leaf-spring 109 engaging the arm 101 with one leg and the carrier 62b or 62a with the other leg, which may be secured to the carrier. Screws 86 in the carrier engage the arm 102 on either side of arm 101. In a further embodiment, Fig. 8 (not shown), the leaf-spring 109a provides the contact arm carrier and the contact pressure spring. Different pivots for the main contact arms are shown in Figs. 2, 5 and 9 (not shown). An adjustable spring 89, Fig. 2, provides lost motion for overtravel of the carriers 62a, 62b, with respect to the associated arcing contact arms. In a three-pole breaker, a cross-bar 64 is provided for conjoint operation, and the centrepole has a movable contact structure 60a and carrier 62a, whilst the outer poles have a contact structure 60b, Fig. 1 (not shown), and carrier 62b, see also Fig. 4 (not shown).
