Abstract

1,228,456. Bitumen emulsions containing rubber. ARMOUR INDUSTRIAL CHEMICAL CO. 30 Aug., 1968 [5 Dec., 1967], No. 41529/68. Heading B1V. [Also in Division C3] An aqueous emulsion with a pH from 1 to 10 contains an asphaltic bitumen phase and an aqueous phase comprising 1-99% thereof of a rubber latex and a minor amount of a cationic emulsifier of one of the following formulae: wherein R=aliphatic hydrocarbon or C 12-24 aralkyl, R 1 = H, CH 3 or -(CH 2 CH 2 O) n H wherein n is an integer from 1 to 30, R 2 =C 1-4 alkyl and A is halide, phosphate, nitrate, acetate or methylsulphate ion. The emulsions are prepared by forming an aqueous phase containing the rubber latex and emulsifier, forming a bituminous phase and dispersing the latter in said aqueous phase. The asphaltic bitumen may be a mixture of 50% to 80% propane asphalt and from 50% to 20% oxidised asphalt. The aqueous phase may comprise 40% to 70% neoprene.
