Abstract

1,228,371. Road barriers. R. F. JARRETT. 9 April, 1968 [12 Jan., 1967], No. 1782/67. Heading E1G. [Also in Division G4] A road barrier operative in one direction only comprises freely rotatable rollers, or rollers enveloped by an endless belt, the grid being set into the surface of an inclined carriageway whereby wheel traction up the incline is prevented. The barrier may be associated with a car park, and means may then be provided for locking the rollers to allow access up the incline. As shown, a frame 12 in an inclined road surface 10 supports a grid of rollers each having a toothed end 20 engageable by a displaceable locking rack 22. The rack 22 is resiliently connected to links 26 actuated by a ram 40 controlled by a solenoid-actuated valve 48. To lock the rollers a switch 68 is closed, either manually or by coin freed apparatus. The rollers are freed by opening switch 76 controlled by a time switch, pressure mat or photo-electric cell. In a modification the rollers are frictionally locked by raising a "rack" having large friction-faced teeth each of which is pushed between a pair of adjacent rollers. It is stated that the rollers may be controlled by ratchet mechanism for unidirectional rotation.
