Abstract
1,227,913. Making watches; stamping. JAP S.A. 22 April, 1969 [26 April, 1968], No. 20456/69. Headings B3A and B3Q. A die-set for stamping raised symbols in watch dials, e.g. Arabic numerals, letters or designs, comprises a die 1 with a depression 2 for holding liquid or a paste to act as a cushion for a dialblank 3, and a die 8 with cavities 10 corresponding to the symbols to be raised. After the symbols have been raised, water, starch solution, oil or grease in the depression escapes over an edge 6 as this continues to penetrate the blank, until a surrounding margin 7 engages the blank. The die 8 may have projections or grooves opposite the edge 6, and a second edge 6 may be provided on die 1. Feet 5 may be soldered to the blank at any point before stamping, e.g. at the point 14, and are located in bores 4 in die 1. Finishing operations may be performed on the blank before the symbols are raised. Openings in the blank may be covered with adhesive paper or lacquer. The date-aperture in a calender watch is cut after the symbols are raised. After forming, the symbols may be faceted and coloured. A paper or lacquer coating may be used which is destroyed in the areas where the symbols are raised in order to apply to the sides 14 of the symbols a colour difference. The dial is finished to size in a lathe and may be cambered.
