[Also in Divisions D1-D2] Yarn is made by forming a suspension of staple carbon fibres in a liquid, depositing the fibres in the form of a tape on an elongated grid by passing the suspension therethrough, forming a continuous yarn from the tape and bonding the fibre together at some stage after formation of the fibre suspension. The carbon fibre suspension can be made by dispersion of the fibres in a turbulent flow of water with the aid of a wetting. agent. The grid can be in the form of a narrow cylinder confined between flanges which are rotatably mounted and partially immersed in the suspension. The liquid phase of the suspension then passes through the grid into the interior of the cylinder and is sucked out through one of the bearings. A baffle can be mounted inside the cylindrical grid, or the cylinder can be internally partitioned so that the suction is restricted to a particular arc of the grid. The binder, e.g. an emulsion or solution of uncured epoxy or polyester resin, can be present in the suspension or can be applied to the formed yarn. The tape can be twisted to form the yarn.
