Abstract

1,227,008. Coating of metals. NIPPON PAINT CO. Ltd. 31 May, 1968 [2 June, 1967], No. 26216/68. Heading B2E. [Also in Divisions C3 and C7] Coating compositions comprise water, a water-soluble organic solvent and, as filmforming component, a mixture of water-soluble thermosetting resins consisting of (A) a water-soluble salt of ammonia or an amine with 100 parts by weight of a copolymer of (1) 40-85 parts by weight of at least one monomer selected from acrylates and methacrylates of C 1 -C 16 alkanols and other monomers free from hydroxyl groups and having 2-16 C atoms and (2) a total of 15-60 parts by weight of an α, #-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid and an epoxy resin having at least 2 epoxy groups in the molecule, the proportion of the epoxy resin being from 0.01-0.5 equivalent with respect to the carboxyl group of the unsaturated acid, said acid having been reacted with 10% or more of the epoxy groups of the epoxy resin, the parts of (1) and (2) totalling 100 parts by weight and the ammonia or amine being present in an amount of 0.5-2.0 equivalents with respect to the carboxyl groups in the copolymer; and (B) 4-50 parts by weight of a water-soluble amino condensation resin. In addition to the (meth) acrylates other suitable components (1) of the copolymer include styrene, vinyl toluene, α-methyl styrene, ethyl styrenes, ethylene, vinyl carboxylate esters, dialkyl maleates and fumarates, and (meth) acrylonitrile. The unsaturated acid component may be selected from acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic, itaconic, maleic and fumaric acids and monoalkyl esters of the specified dicarboxylic acids. The epoxy resin is suitably a reaction product of bisphenol A and epichlorohydrin. The copolymer may optionally include up to 30 parts by weight of a hydroxyl-containing monomer, e.g. a hydroxyalkyl (meth) acrylate (meth) allyl. alcohol or N-methylol-(meth)-acrylamide. Suitable as the amino resin (B) are aldehyde (e.g. formaldehyde) condensation products of compounds such as urea, melamine, benzoguanamine and. dicyandiamide, and etherified derivatives thereof. Water-soluble solvents specified are alkanols, monoalkyl ethers of glycols, dioxane, acetone and diacetone alcohol. Pigments may also be included in the compositions, e.g. basic lead chromate, calcium carbonate, titanium dioxide and red iron oxide, and also water-soluble alkyd or phenol resins. The compositions may be applied by spray coating, brush coating or dip coating, and baked at 90-200‹C. They are particularly suited to the coating of metals such as iron, iron alloys, aluminium and aluminium alloys.
