Abstract
1,213,805. Polycarboxylic acid resins and copolymerization thereof. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. 3 Oct., 1967 [3 Oct., 1966 (3); 7 Sept., 1967], No. 11081/70. Divided out of 1,213,803. Headings C3B, C3G, C3P and C3R. Polycarboxylic acid resins have a molecular weight >1000, an acid no. >30, an electrical equivalent weight of 1000-20,000 and 0À5-3À0 α-# unsaturation units per 1000 units of molecular weight. The resins may be prepared by polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomers, e.g. a mixture of methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate, glycidyl methacrylate and methacrylic acid. They may be polyesters, e.g. from fumaric acid, tetrahydrophthalic anhydride and trimethylolpropane monoallyl ether. Other resins, are prepared by modification of epoxy resins, e.g. reacting a polyglycidyl ether of bisphenol A with itaconic anhydride. The resins may be used in conjunction with 1-15% by wt. of vinyl monomers, e.g. styrene or methyl methacrylate. The resins may be rendered water soluble by neutralization with a water soluble amino compound (including ammonia) and used as binders for electrophoretic coating compositions which may contain conventional pigments (see Specification 1,213,803).
