Abstract

[Also in Division C3] Substrates, e.g. aluminium, steel, wood, and ABS copolymer, may be coated with paints containing an unsaturated organosiloxane obtained by reaction of a siloxane containing at least two hydroxy and/or hydrocarbonoxy groups with a hydroxyester of an alpha, betaunsaturated carboxylic acid. Preferred siloxanes contain 3-18 Si atoms and may be linear or cyclic or polycyclic: suitable structures are shown. Suitable hydroxyesters are listed. Paints may be prepared contaning 20-- 80 p.b.w. of the unsaturated siloxane and 80- 20 p.b.w. complementally of a 'vinyl binder' (i.e. a polymer of an olefinically unsaturated compound, of MW 1000-50000) or an alpha, beta-unsaturated polyester resin or epoxy resin or diurethane (e.g. obtained from a polyol or a diepoxide and an alpha, beta-unsaturated acid or from a diisocyanate and a hydroxyester of such an acid), and preferably also 10-200 p.b.w. of a vinyl monomer. In Examples 1-17 unsaturated polysiloxanes are prepared from various methyl phenyl methoxy trisiloxanes and hydrolysates thereof and from a cyclic tetrahydroxysiloxane, a dipropoxy tetramethyl cyclotrisiloxane, a dibutoxy tetramethyl disiloxane and a trimethoxy pentamethyl trisiloxane and a number of 2- hydroxyalkyl acrylates, methacrylates, crotonates or cinnamates; they are mixed with methyl methacrylate and isopropyl titanate to give paints which are cured by electron. irradiation. In futher Examples 18-127 the siloxanes are mixed with methyl methacrylate, with and without TiO 2 and styrene, and with various vinyl binders (from e.g. methylmethacrylate, ethyl acrylate, glycidyl methacrylate and methacrylic acid) [Exs. 30-52] or various polyester resins (from e.g. maleic and phthalic anhydrides and neopentyl glycol) [Exs. 53- 76] or a diisocyanate-modified polyester (from succinic acid, tetrahydrophthalic anhydride and propylene gylcol, and toluene diisocyanate) [Ex. 71] or various unsaturated epoxy resins (from e.g. butanediol or bisphenol A, epichlorhydrin and methacrylic acid) [Exs. 79-98] or various unsaturated diurethanes (from e.g. hydroxyethyl methacrylate and toluene diisocyanate) [Exs. 99-129] or mixtures of these, in various proportions.
