Abstract

1451986 Coating compositions ROHM & HAAS CO 7 Feb 1974 [20 Feb 1973 21 June 1973] 05693/74 Headings C3P and C3R Thermosetting coating compositions comprise an alkaline aqueous blend of (A) a latex of a water-insoluble copolymer of (1) a monovinyl aromatic monomer, (2) at least one ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid free from amide or hydroxyl groups, (3) at least one olefinically unsaturated monomer having at least one amide or hydroxyl group and (4) at least one olefinically unsaturated monomer having a carboxyl group in free acid form or in the form of a salt with ammonia or a water-soluble volatile amine, the amount of (3) being 1À5 to 10% when the monomer contains an amide group and 1À5 to 10% when the monomer contains a hydroxyl group and the amount of (4) being 0À5 to 5%, based on the total weight of monomers, the Tg of the polymer being below 45‹ C.; and (B) a watersoluble condensate of urea or a triazine with formaldehyde, or an ethanol or methanol ether thereof; the weight ratio of (A) to (B) being 35 : 65 to 65 : 35, the minimum film-forming temperature of the composition being no higher than 25‹ C., the composition having a solids content of 40 to 80 weight per cent and containing 1 to 5% by weight of the solids of components A and B of a water-soluble polyethylene oxide having a molecular weight of at most 100,000 or polyethylene glycol or derivative thereof as rheology modifier. Preferred copolymers are derived from (1) styrene or vinyl toluene, (2) C 2-12 alkyl acrylates or C 6-14 alkyl methacrylates, (3) acrylamide, methacrylamide or hydroxyethyl or hydroxypropyl acrylates or methacrylates, and (4) acrylic, methacrylic or itaconic acids. Preferred condensates are methyl ethers of urea- or melamine-formaldehyde condensates. Preferably the compositions contain a volatile base, e.g. a tertiary amine. They may also contain pigments and dispersants, and may be used for coating metal sheets which may be post-formed into cans, lids and screw caps, or ceramics or wood, by direct or reverse roll coating. Examples describe coating compositions comprising polyethylene glycols or polyethylene oxides, triethylamine and (1) methylated melamine/formaldehyde condensate and styrene/ isobutyl acrylate/hydroxyethyl methacrylate/ methacrylic acid copolymer; and methylated urea/formaldehyde condensates and (2-6) styrene/butyl acrylate/methacrylamide/methacrylic acid copolymers and (7) styrene/butyl acrylate/hydroxyethyl methacrylate/methacrylie acid copolymer; and optionally pigments such as titanium dioxide.
