Abstract

1,225,848. Thermoplastic films; extruding film. KALLE A.G. 12 Dec., 1968 [13 Dec., 1967], No. 59095/68. Headings B5A and B5B. In making a film a high polymer melt is extruded at a temperature of 200‹ to 300‹ C. through a slot die on to the surface of a rotating, cooled roller, which has a surface temperature of 10‹ to 80‹ C., and rotates with a peripheral speed of 5 to 50 meters/minute the viscosity of the emerging melt being more than 2000 poise, and the film is applied flat in a thickness of more than 0À3 mm. on the roller surface and substantially vertically below the die slot, in an electrical high-voltage direct current corona field produced by a voltage of 5 to 30 kV and with the simultaneous application of dynamic gas pressure of 50 to 400 mm. water column upon that surface of the film remote from the roller surface, and further electrical direct-current corona fields, extending substantially along and over the edges of the film are then employed to hold the edges of the film in contact with the surface of the roller up to a subsequent immersion of the film in a cooling bath. The melt is preferably extruded at a specific delivery rate of more than 5000 cm.<SP>3</SP>/hour per cm. of length of slot. The high polymer may be a polyolefin, e.g. polyethylene or polypropylene. In Fig. 1, the melt passes from an etxruder through a feed pipe as shown by arrow A into extrusion die 1. The distance of the edges of the die slot from the surface of the cooling roller 2 is 1 to 10 cm. and the melt has a path of 10 to 300 mm. between the die slot and the roller surface. Roller 2 rotates in a bath 3 containing cooling liquid 3a, e.g. water. An electrode 5 passes through the pressure air housing 4 above the film and over the entire film width. Electrodes 6 and 7 begin inside the housing, extends above the surface of the film and along its edges, and terminate above the level of the liquid in the bath. Two felt strips 9 seal the lower side edges of housing 4 with respect to the surface of the roller. One of two similarly arranged nozzles for regulating the inlet of air is shown at 11. A stream of gas preferably air produces on the surface of the film the required pressure.
