Abstract

[Also in Divisions B5, H1 and H2] A method for the surface treatment of thermoplastic tubing to improve its receptivity to ink, adhesive and the like comprises arranging a length of the tubing on a forming member surrounded by a concentrically spaced annular electrode and impressing an alternating voltage between the electrode and the member sufficient to produce a corona discharge. As shown, a mass of thermoplastic material 20 is extruded from between dies 17, 18 on to a mandrel 56, water cooled by line connection 57 and pump 58 which sets the size of the inside of the tube, past coolant sprays from nozzles 64 supplied with coolant through pipes 60, 61, 63 which sets the size of the outside of the tube, the formed tube T being pulled by rollers (Fig. 1, not shown). An annular electrode 50 is supported by fastening means 50a on a plate 45 in turn supported on rods 33, 34 screwed into the extension die housing 13 and an alternating voltage is supplied to electrode 50 through lead 52, mandrel 56 being earthed as shown at 59. Plate 45 also supports a wiper ring 46, and a further wiper ring 41 is supported by plate 37 on the rods 33, 34. An electricity supply and protective circuit is shown in Fig. 5 (see Division H2).
