Abstract

1, 044, 529. Coating webs. COMMERCIAL PLASTICS Ltd. Dec. 3, 1963 [Dec. 14, 1962], No. 47310/62. Heading D1L. An electrically non-conducting web 10 is coated on both sides by being passed between spray heads 12, 13 across which a high tension electrostatic field is maintained. The spray heads may be mechanical atomizers but, as shown, they are preferably an electrostatic type. Each head comprises a base plate 15 supported by brackets on insulators 17, a trough 18 to which coating liquid is passed by a pipe 20 and over a weir-forming edge of which the coating liquid passes to flow down the blade 15, a retainer blade 22 having a lower edge 23 closely approaching the blade 15 and supporting brackets 24 provided with screw means to adjust its separation from the blade 15. The spray heads are charged to high, equal and opposite potentials, brass spheres 25 being provided on the corners of the plates 15 to control the field in these regions. Alternatively each spray head comprises an inclined doctor blade having a feed roller in contact with the upper edge thereof. Drying apparatus e.g. an oven 14 may be provided. The distance between the edge of the blades 15 and the web is preferably between 4 and 7 inches while the potential on each head is in the range 55-125 kV. Examples are given of (a) coating a paper web with polyvinyl chloride and (b), coating a polypropylene web with polyvinylidene chloride; details of the constituents of the coating composition and drying temperatures being given in each case.
