Abstract

1,225,624. Coating. ROBINSON WAXED PAPER CO. Ltd. 7 June, 1968 [15 June, 1967], No. 27602/67. Heading B2E. A packaging material is produced by coating a substrate of sheet material with a composition of the hot melt type, treating the coated substrate with an electrical discharge treatment and applying to the discharge-treated material a polyvinylidene chloride coating. A composition of the hot melt type is defined as one whose ingredients are capable of being blended into a viscous molten mass for application to a substrate of sheet material. The coating composition of the hot melt type may comprise pertoleum wax, which may optionally contain an ethylene copolymer such as ethylene/vinyl acetate, ethylene/ethyl acrylate or ethylene/ isobutyl acrylate copolymers. It may also contain hydrocarbon resins, rosins or rosin derivatives, terpene resins or methyl styrene/vinyl toluene copolymer. The ingredients of the coating composition may be applied as a viscous melt or dissolved or dispersed in organic or aqueous media. The coating composition of the hot melt type may be applied to the substrate by any suitable means such as roller coating, extrusion coating, gravure coating, curtain coating or kiss and scrape coating. The substrate may be paper such as clay-coated paper or glassine, a foil paper laminate material, or a cellulosic or plastics film material. The electric discharge treatment is preferably carried out with a corona discharge unit at a power of 6-8 wtts/sq. foot. The polyvinylidene chloride can be applied in aqueous dispersion, or in organic solvents, by conventional means.
