Abstract

Heat sealable adhesive compositions comprise at least a two-component mixture, which may be dissolved or dispersed in a suitable vehicle if necessary, a first component being a heat sealable copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate which will adhere to a base material and the second component being a polymer or copolymer of at least one monoethylenically unsaturated monomer which reduces the cohesive or adhesive strength of the said first component to provide peelability. Specified second components are polystyrene, polymethyl methacrylate, polyvinyl acetate, vinyl chloride/acetate copolymer, polyvinylidene chloride, polyvinyl butyral, chlorinated polyvinyl chloride, chlorosulphonated polyethylene, polypropylene, butadie ne-acrylonitrile copolymer, butadiene - styrene copolymer, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer and non-aromatic and aromatic hydrocarbon polymers. The polymer components may be dissolved in a solvent such as toluene or dispersed in an aqueous medium. The composition may also include a plasticizer, e.g. cyclohexyl benzenesulphonamide or cyclohexyl toluenesulphonamide.ALSO:Adhesive compositions comprising an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer and another polymer or copolymer of at least one monoethylenically unsaturated monomer, which reduces the adhesive strength of the first copolymer, are coated on base materials such as paper, board, film, foil and laminated or coated materials. The compositions may include plasticisers. The said other polymer or copolymer may be, for example, polystyrene, polymethyl methacrylate, polyvinyl acetate, vinyl chloride/acetate copolymer, polyvinylidene chloride, polyvinyl butyral, chlorinated polyvinyl chloride, chlorosulphonated polyethylene, poly propylene and copolymers of butadiene with styrene and/or acrylonitrile. Substrates specified for coating with the adhesive are (1) Kraft paper coated with polyethylene or polyproylene (2) polyethylene film (3) Glassine paper and (4) unplasticised polyvinyl chloride. The adhesive may be applied as a hot melt, as an aqueous dispersion or as a solution in a solvent, e.g. toluene, by methods such as roller or gravure coating or by extrusion.
