Abstract

1,224,691. Knitting-machines. E. SICK. 26 March, 1969 [8 April, 1968], No. 15709/69. Heading D1C. [Also in Division G1] Irregularities in the a.c. component produced by detecting reflections from needles passing a photo cell 6 Fig. 4 in a knitting machine are detected by circuitry responsive to the time interval .between consecutive senser output signals. The circuitry may comprise a capacitor integrator C2 receiving a constant input through a transistor T5 and Zener diode Z, the capacity being discharged by pulses from the photo-cell 6 passing an adjustable threshold device 38 to transistor 14. Excessive time intervals between pulses resulting from broken or bent needles lead to higher charge on the capacitor which is arranged to activate a relay 15 to stop the machine through a threshold switch 16, a differentiating circuit C3, R22, and a transistor T7. A diode D4 is connected to slug the relay. A circular knitting machine may have both rib and cylinder needles separately monitored to jointly control common stop and alarm apparatus. Light from a source 1, Fig. 2, may be converted into an annular beam 8 before being directed by lenses 283 on to a needle 4 and the reflected light is directed by a central lens 5 on to a photo cell 6.
