Abstract

122,449. Wall, A. W. Jan. 19, 1918. Connecting - rods; pistons.-The piston of an internal-combustion engine is formed of two stamped &c. sheetmetal cups a, b secured base to base by riveting, bolting, spot - welding, or otherwise. The upper cup a is closed by a third cup k, which is secured in position by welding &c. or by swaging over the edges of the cup a, and the hollow interior may be filled with asbestos or other non-conducting material. The walls of the cup f may be notched to reduce the weight, and the walls of the cups a and b also may be notched or perforated, the openings being covered by a light lining in the case of a two-stroke engine. A groove for a packing-ring : i is formed at the junction of the cups a, b, and additional packing- ring grooves may be formed in the cup b. Recesses e, f are formed in the webs of the cups to accommodate the gudgeon end of the connecting- rod, which may be constructed as described in Specification 122,450.
