Abstract

1,224,493. Cushioning packaged articles. N. J. TOWNSEND. 24 March, 1969 [22 March, 1968], No. 13892/68. Heading B8C. An article, e.g. a radio or television receiver, is packaged with cushioning means interposed between the article and a container, e.g. a box or carton, and comprising at least one closed hollow member, e.g. of blow moulded polyethylene, containing air or other gaseous medium and having a re-entrant part contacting the article bounded at least partly by plane intersecting walls which are flexibly deformable against the air or gas. The parts of the member contacting the container may be formed with corrugations, grooves, or dimples, and the member may be held in position on the article prior to insertion into the container frictionally, or by cords or straps locating in grooves in the member. The member may comprise rectangular blocks, Fig. 1 (not shown), each having a rectangular recess which fits snugly over an end of a radio receiver, or may alternatively be cylindrical, Fig. 3, with a recess, defined by walls 8, 9 and 10, within which locate one of the four end edges and corners of a rectangular shaped article. The member may also be right angled in section, Fig. 4 (not shown), with a recess enclosing an end edge and corner of an article, or may comprise a recessed pyrimidial corner piece, Fig. 5, or a generally rectangular corner piece, Fig. 6 (not shown), or may merely comprise a pair of walls at right angles, Fig. 7 (not shown), to be applied along the edge of an article.
