Abstract

1,223,915. Purification of nitriles. BP CHEMICALS (U.K.) Ltd. 15 Sept., 1969 [18 Sept., 1968], No. 44320/68. Heading C2C. Saturated aliphatic nitrites, e.g. acetonitrile, containing ammonia and/or iminodipropionitrile as impurities, are purified by contact with a cation exchange resin based on polystyrene cross-linked with divinyl benzene in its acid form and which is insoluble in the nitrile. The nitrile may be the acetonitrile obtained as a by-product in the production of acrylonitrile from an olefin, oxygen and ammonia, and containing a small proportion of acrylonitrile.
